President Obama Apologizes to President and People of Afghanistan for the Quran Burning

US President, Barack Obama sent President Karzai a letter to apologize for the incident in which copies of the Holy Quran were burnt in Bagram military base.

In the official letter conveyed to the President this afternoon by Ryan Crocker, the US ambassador to Afghanistan, President Obama has written that the incident in their facility was not intentional and assured the President of full investigation.

President Obama writes, “I wish to express my deep regret for the reported incident. I extend to you and the Afghan people my sincere apologies.”

“The error was inadvertent; I assure you that we will take the appropriate steps to avoid any recurrence, to include holding accountable those responsible” the letter concludes.

Ambassador Tanin Re-Elected As Vice-Chair of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People

The UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, convened today, February 10, 2012, at UN Headquarters.  The meeting of the committee, which was presided over by H.E. UN Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon, re-elected members of the Bureau of the committee and adopted the draft program of its work for 2012.

The Committee elected H.E. Abdou Salam Diallo, Permanent Representative of Senegal to the UN as Chairman of the Committee; H.E. Dr. Zahir Tanin, Permanent Representative of Afghanistan, and H.E. Pedro Nunez Mosquera, Permanent Representative of Cuba as Vice-Chairmen of the Committee; and H.E., Mr. Christopher Grima, Permanent Representative of Malta as Rapporteur.

The Committee further approved Ecuador’s request to become the Committee’s newest full member, approved the Committee’s program of work for 2012, and heard a briefing from Chairman of the Committee on the outcome of the recent UN Seminar on Assistance to the Palestinian People, held from 6-7 February 2012 in Cairo, Egypt.
