In separate telephone conversations tonight, Pakistani and Turkish Presidents and United States Secretary of State congratulated President Hamid Karzai on his victory in the Afghan elections.
US government congratulates President Hamid Karzai on his reelection
The government of the United States today welcomed the decision by the Afghan Independent Election Commission to forego the runoff, and congratulated President Hamid karzai for his reelection in the Afghan elections.
The US Embassy in Kabul issued a statement on Monday stating, “The United States welcomes the decision by the Independent Election Commission (IEC) to conclude Afghanistan’s electoral process by foregoing a second round of balloting. We appreciate that the IEC has taken this decision according to its mandate under Afghan law.
Throughout, the United States has been committed to supporting the Afghan people and the institutions of their government in carrying out a constitutional electoral process.
We congratulate President Karzai on his victory in this historic election and look forward to working with him, his new Administration, the Afghan people and our partners in the international community to support Afghanistan’s progress towards the institutional reforms, security and prosperity. We also congratulate Dr. Abdullah and all the other candidates for their efforts to strengthen Afghanistan’s democratic future.”
British Prime Minister congratulates President Karzai on his reelction
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in a telephone conversation today congratulated President Hamid Karzai on his victory in the Afghan elections.
Mr. Brown stressed on his country’s continued cooperation with Afghanistan and wished prosperity and progress for the people and government of Afghanistan.
President Karzai thanked British Prime Minister and stress on the expansion of UK-Afghan relations.

I welcome today’s decision by Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission to forego a run-off vote and to declare Hamid Karzai as the winner of the 2009 presidential elections. I congratulate President Karzai.
This has been a difficult election process for Afghanistan and lessons must be learned. Afghanistan now faces significant challenges and the new President must move swiftly to form a Government that is able to command the support of both the Afghan people and the international community. The United Nations remains committed to providing every support and assistance to the new Government in helping to push forward progress for all peoples of Afghanistan.

China congratulates Karzai on re-election as Afghan president
China on Tuesday congratulated Afghan President Hamid Karzai on his re-election and pledged to continue support for the war-torn country’s reconstruction.
“We respect the choice of the Afghan people, and we express our congratulations to Mr. Karzai on his election as the president of Afghanistan for a new term,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu at a regular press conference.
The Afghan Independent Election Commission (IEC) announced Monday that incumbent President Hamid Karzai had won the election after his main challenger, Abdullah Abdullah, withdrew from the run-off set for Nov. 7.
“As a friendly neighbor of Afghanistan, China is committed to cementing friendly cooperative ties with the country and supporting its reconstruction,” Ma said.
“We sincerely hope that Afghanistan can realize peace, stability and development as soon as possible,” he said.
